I remember eighth grade graduation like it was yesterday. Michelle and I gathered at the reception afterwards, celebrating the occasion together and looking forward to the future. We never could have known in that moment how different the world would look in only a few months’ time. Receiving the Michelle Chalk Scholarship this year was bittersweet; I wish this scholarship didn’t exist, because I wish my dear friend was preparing to graduate with the rest of the class of 2021 this year. Since she is not able to do so, the best I can do is try to carry her legacy forward and promote an environment of kindness and friendship wherever I go. I cannot express how grateful I am to have the honor of carrying Michelle’s name with me from now on. She is, and will always remain, my greatest influence and I hope to make her proud. The funds from the Michelle Chalk Scholarship will greatly assist me in fostering Michelle’s spirit in my future endeavors. Thank you for this indescribable honor; I will always live free. Sending love to the Chalk family, and all who knew Michelle.
