The 2018 Michelle Chalk Award for outstanding pride, spirit, enthusiasm and unity of purpose to the Highlands Choirs was presented to Madison Kaufman.

“Finding it difficult to express my feelings as Maddie received a special award today at the HHS choir picnic. How can one’s heart feel so heavy and light at the same time? The bleakness of that sad summer day still brings tears to my eyes and the pain in my heart still feels as fresh as when I learned one of my former students had been taken from this world at such a young age. Michelle was so full of life and the warmth of her spirit radiated from her smile. Michelle’s enthusiasm for life and her desire for others to do well truly made a difference to that third grade class several years ago. Once I met her, the prayer for my own children became “let them find a friend like Michelle”….a friend so compassionate and kind, always noticing the downtrodden and offering a helping hand or a word of encouragement. A friend who loves life to the fullest and wants only the best for those around her. I am honored to know others see some of Michelle’s characteristics in Maddie. What an incredible compliment! ❤❤❤”
